Black Lake on Durmitor

The Black Lake, known in Montenegrin as Crno jezero, is the best-known of the glacial lakes on the Durmitor massif and one of the main reasons visitors come to the area. It lies close to the town of Žabljak, within Durmitor National Park, and it is large, clear and surrounded by forest, making it both a beautiful place and an easy one to reach. Together with the other lakes of the massif it belongs to the wider World Heritage property of the park.

The lake is glacial in origin, formed in a hollow left by ice long ago and fed by springs and small streams. Its water is cold and, at times, remarkably clear, and the forest around it comes down close to the shore.

Black Lake on Durmitor

A lake of two parts

The Black Lake is often described as a single lake, but it is really two connected basins, linked by a narrow channel that can appear or disappear depending on the water level. In times of high water the two parts merge into one broad sheet; in dry periods the connection narrows and the separate character of each basin becomes clearer.

This behaviour reflects how the lake is fed and drained. It sits in a shallow basin over limestone and other rocks, and its level responds to rainfall, snowmelt and the underground drainage that is typical of this kind of terrain.

Walking around the water

A path circles the lake, and the circuit is one of the most popular walks in the park. It is not difficult, but it is long enough to give a real sense of the place, passing through forest and along the shore with frequent views of the water and the surrounding peaks. Benches and viewpoints are placed along the route, and small boats operate in season.

  • The lake is close to Žabljak and easy to reach.
  • A path runs right around the water.
  • The circuit passes forest and open shoreline.
  • Boats operate in the summer season.

A base for the mountains

Because it is near the main resort area of Durmitor, the Black Lake is a natural starting point for longer walks into the massif. Trails lead from the lake toward higher ground, other lakes and viewpoints, and the network of routes makes the area one of the best walking bases in Montenegro. The contrasts are part of the appeal: a calm lakeside circuit one day, a demanding climb the next.

The lake itself is not a wilderness experience in the busiest weeks, because the paths can be crowded. Early mornings and the shoulder seasons offer a quieter version of the same walk, when the water is still and the forest is at its most atmospheric.

The lakes of Durmitor

The Black Lake is only one of a set of glacial lakes scattered across the Durmitor massif. Locally they are called the mountain eyes, and they are counted in their dozens, though most are small and require a hike to reach. They form a distinctive element of the park's landscape and are one reason the massif was recognised as a World Heritage property.

Each lake has its own character and setting: some lie in open pasture, others in forest, and others among bare rock. Visiting even a few of them is a good way to understand the variety of the massif, and the Black Lake, being the most accessible, is where most people begin.

Weather and seasons

Durmitor sits at high altitude, so the lake has a mountain climate. Summers are short and can be cool, with clear days alternating with cloud and rain, while winters are long and snowy, and the lake area becomes a different landscape entirely. Snow can lie well into spring, and the highest trails are seasonal.

Whatever the season, conditions can change quickly, and the weather at the lake is not always the weather on the peaks. Layers, proper footwear and a check of the forecast are worth the small effort they cost, especially for anyone planning to leave the lakeside path for the higher ground.

Nearby places and the town of Žabljak

The town of Žabljak, close to the lake, developed as the main centre of the Durmitor area and offers accommodation, food and supplies for visitors. It is a base rather than a destination in itself, but its position makes it the natural starting point for the lake, for the higher trails and for the viewpoints of the massif. From here, roads and paths fan out into the park.

Around the lake and the town there are further reasons to linger: other lakes, forest walks, viewpoints over the plateau and, in winter, a snow-covered landscape that transforms the whole area. Combining a lakeside walk with a visit to a second lake or a short drive to a viewpoint turns a quick stop into a full and varied day.

Why the lake is the place to start

The Black Lake is the easiest and most beautiful introduction to Durmitor. It offers clear water, forest, a manageable circuit and immediate access to the wider trail network, all within reach of the main resort. For a first visit to the massif it is the obvious point from which to begin, and for many people the memory of the lake is the memory of the park itself.

Travel responsibly. Heritage sites and national parks are protected areas. Stay on marked paths, take your litter away, respect local communities and wildlife, and follow the current rules and fees published by each site and park authority.
