UNESCO approves 10.000 USD for the project “Presentation and Organization of Doclea Archeological Site”

In the framework of the call for applications of the Montenegrin National Commission for UNESCO under the Participation Programme 2012-2013, the Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova has approved the project “Presentation and Organization of Doclea Archeological Site” for an amount of 10.000 USD. Partners in the implementation of the project are Museums and Galleries of Podgorica and the Historical Institute of Montenegro. In addition to the activities on the organization of the archeological site and the preparation of numerous publications, the project will also involve the formation of an electronic library that will be available to the international scientific body.

The main purpose of the realization of the project “Presentation and Organization of Doclea Archeological Site” is the raising of national and international public awareness regarding the most important archeological site in Montenegro, the establishment of scientific and professional basis for the continuation of the research within the site, and the creation of conditions for the introduction of Doclea in the tourism offer of Podgorica and Montenegro. In view of the fact that cultural tourism is becoming one of the most important segments of the tourism offer in Montenegro, Doclea, as the biggest and the most significant archeological site, can contribute greatly to the positive image of the cultural heritage in Montenegro, even though it still lacks the necessary conditions for a full tourist valorization. The project “Presentation and Organization of Doclea Archeological Site” will contribute to the international recognition of the Doclea site, and will enhance its scientific and technical potential, as well as the presentation of the cultural heritage of Montenegro.

Every project approved under the Participation Programme must respect the propositions defined in the document 36C/Resolution 69. The projects must be aligned with the global priorities of UNESCO and respect gender equality in all phases of their implementation and evaluation.

This is the third Montenegrin project approved by the UNESCO under the Participation Programme, after the approvation of 34.000 USD to the project “Towards the Designation of Lake Skadar as Trans-Boundary Biosphere Reserve”, realized by the NGO Green Home and the Albanian Institute for Nature Conservation, and 26.000 USD to the project “Providing Interactive Centers for Early and Preschool Education”, realized by the Ministry of Education of Montenegro.
